Welcome to California Athletics  The purpose of this web site is to provide information and schedule for all programs offered by California Athletics, and to streamline registrations and enrollments in classes and programs.   California Athletics has developed many different programs and opportunities, and this site will give the details about each one on one of the sub-pages listed at the top of this page.  Below, you will find a brief description of each program.  If this is the program you are interested in, please click on the link for that program on the left side of this page.

Home School Sports: California Athletics for Home Schools was created to meet the needs of home schooling families in the areas of competitive athletics and physical education.  CAHS was founded by Todd Nash, a home schooling father in San Diego, and offers a variety of classes and competitive sports for all ages, and in most areas of California.  Fundamentals of Sports classes are offered to home schooled children ages 5 to 18 to teach the basic individual skills of various sports.  Competitive Sports Teams are also offered for home schooled students.  To learn about these classes and teams, click on the "HOME SCHOOL SPORTS" link on the left side of this page.

Fencing Clinic: For information about the 1 week FENCING CLINIC Todd will teach in southern California January 4-8, 2010, click on HOME SCHOOL SPORTS, then SPORTS CLASSES, then FENCING.

Water Sports: California Athletics also operates a water sports program offering many opportunities.  We run water sports camps that give participants the opportunity to drive jet skis (with adult supervision for children), knee board, tube, water ski, wakeboard, or wake skate behind the Seadoo 155HP jet skis!!  We also rent jet skis and do jet ski riding/driving, short term (low cost) outings.  Click on WATER SPORTS at the top to get the details.

High School Sports Teams & Leagues: California Athletics is organizing state wide sports league in California for schools and teams not participating in CIF.  We have a tackle football league, a volleyball league, basketball teams in many areas, a 6 man soccer league, and track & field opportunities for high school age athletes who are not in CIF schools and some middle school age students.  It is our goal to consolidate as many teams as possible under one umbrella to give maximum competitive opportunities to students and schools who choose not to or are unable to compete in CIF.  Click on the SPORTS TEAMS/LEAGUES link at the top for information about the league you may be interested in.  Information about the league schedule and results will also be posted on that page.

International Sports Ambassadors (ISA): ISA is offering a baseball tour next summer (August, 2010) to take 18 high school age baseball players (age 15-17) to Japan for a 2 week tour after 4 days in San Diego.  We will play baseball games against Japanese high school teams, US military teams, teach baseball clinics for the youth on the military bases and the local community, and tour the country, culminating with attending the Japanese National High School Championship game in Koshien.  It will be the trip of a lifetime for baseball players (and any family members who want to accompany them).  To learn more about the trip, click on ISA at the top of this page.

Track & Field Meet: California Athletics will host a track & field meet Friday, May 15, 2009 open to all students from any background, ages 6 - 18 in Escondido.  This meet is open to any athlete not competing in CIF in high school track.  Home schooled, charter schooled, private schooled, or any other school background is eligible to participate.  Medals are awarded to the top finisher in each event.  Click on the TRACK MEET link at the top for all the information.

WHY SHOULD MY KIDS PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS?

Recently I have heard several reports from the medical community that should get our attention as parents.  One report I heard said that OUR CHILDREN'S GENERATION is the first generation in 200 years that is expected to live a SHORTER LIFESPAN than their parents! Cause: Lack of Physical Fitness, and Obesity. (The second is directly related to the first.)  The second report I heard said that Obesity has now overtaken smoking as the #1 preventable cause of death in America. Again, this is directly tied to physical activity, fitness, sports, etc.  It all came together for me with a quote I heard in a movie we watched recently. A literature and history professor said to his class, "THE END DEPENDS UPON THE BEGINNING."

We as parents need to ensure that they are involved in some type of physical activity. Sports instruction provides them with a skill they can use for the rest of their lives to maintain some level of physical activity and fitness. I spend my time focusing in the PE classes on mainstream sports for this reason. Most of our kids will not win college scholarships or play pro ball. But ALL them need to develop a lifestyle that includes fitness as a part of it, and sports provide one of the best ways to stay physically fit. I personally experience this. When I am involved in a sport MYSELF (not just teaching one), it pushes me at my older age to maintain a higher level of activity and fitness.

There are many things we do as parents with our children's future's in mind. This needs to be added to that list for their long term well being. We do not ask them if they feel like doing math or reading, and let them skip out on those areas if they don't feel like it. Neither should we let their feelings about fitness determine whether or not they participate in a sports class. We should make some of these decisions for them, for their best interests, as we do with many other areas of their life. It is much easier for us as home school families to have inactive children. We must put out extra efforts to ensure we overcome this. You do not have to take a class from California Athletics, but please ensure there is some type of physical training happening for their well being.

If you have nothing else, we at California Athletics offer a full variety of Fundamentals of Sports Classes, designed to teach our children the basic skills in many different mainstream sports. These are sports that they can play the rest of their life; basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, soccer, track & field. These classes are currently offered in 12 sites in Southern California, and many in Northern California. There are also competitive sports leagues where they can play in a variety of sports.

Remember, "The end depends upon the beginning". If we want them to live long and healthy lives, some of that depends on what we have them do now, at the beginning!
