Fundamentals of Basketball Class

In the fall of 2007, CAHS will offer a Fundamentals of Basketball class in 13 sites in Southern California.  The classes will start the week of October 1, 2007, meeting once a week for 1 hour for 8 weeks.  The schedule this fall will have a break in November.  We will take the week of Nov 12-16 off.  The Monday and Tuesday classes will meet the week of Thanksgiving and complete the class the following week, Nov 26-27.  The Wed-Thurs classes will not meet the week of Thanksgiving, but after the November 12-16 break will resume on Wed-Thurs, November 28-29, and have the last class on Wed-Thurs, Dec 5-6.  (There are no classes Nov 9-16 because Coach Nash is taking a vacation with his family.)

Students will learn the basic skills involved in basketball, the rules, and basic techniques of the game over an 8 week period in October and November.  Most of the class time will be spent on working on skills in ball handling, passing, dribbling, shooting, defensive positioning and drills, and basic team tactics.  These skills will be taught and developed with drills and a small amount of controlled scrimmaging in the last couple weeks to learn offensive strategy.  We will not set up teams and play full games - this is not a competitive team or league, but a chance to learn the game and develop skills to prepare students for competitive leagues that start in the winter.

The basketball class is a GREAT class for your children to learn athletic skills while having fun.  Every student will have a ball in their hand the whole class, working on some skill.  This is a great class for younger kids to learn motor skills, beginning conditioning, hand eye coordination, and team play.  The class is suitable for those who have never played basketball or any other sport.  It is also a good skill refresher and builder for those who have played basketball.  Many of your kids who play league ball never get time to work on fundamental skills with their teams, so this class will help them develop their skills.  ALL girls and boys who want to play on the CAHS basketball teams this winter should take this class to get started working on skills for the winter season.

Basketballs and shorter basketball goals will be provided, and the classes will be conducted at the basketball court at an outdoor park in your area.  Students need only wear athletic clothing, tennis shoes, and bring a water bottle.  Three sizes of basketballs are provided, each one appropriate to your child's age and size.  You should plan to purchase a basketball for your children to practice outside of class.  This is a critical element to their success - they will need to practice 15 minutes each day the skills we learn in class.  Class size will be limited and spaces given to the first enrollees with fees paid.  Feel free to email or call with questions, but please do not  register for this class unless you intend to attend the class, and please read the website in detail to see if your questions are answered herein.

If you are with a charter school which will pay for your class, contact your ES, EF, consultant, or teacher and have a purchase order or voucher issued for the class.  If I have a purchase order in hand prior to the start of class, I will not require a deposit.  The only way for you to ensure this as a parent is to have a copy of the PO to hand to me the first day in case I did not receive it.  I will have all POs that I have received in my possession at the first classes.  Without a PO in hand, you will be required to write a check that will be deposited for the class.  When I get a PO for the class and the charter school pays me, your deposit will be refunded.  This will likely not happen until the completion of the class.  So it is in your best interest to ensure that your charter school has the PO issued and in my hands prior to the first class, and you should bring a copy of it with you.  It is the parent's responsibility to ensure this is done.  CalAthletics cannot pursue individual purchase orders with charter schools.  Without a deposit check or PO no student may start the class.  Without a purchase order from the charter school, the deposit check will be used to pay the fee for the class.
