Tackle Football
Home Up

In the fall of 2008 California Athletics expanded the tackle football league started last fall for boys who are high school age to 4 teams.  Next fall (2009) we anticpate 6-8 teams in the league from all over southern California.  If you are interested in playing as an individual player, OR if your private school, charter school, home school group, or any other group is interested in fielding a team of your own in the league, please contact Todd Nash at California Athletics immediately for information about next fall's league.  You will be emailed forms and an outline of the league plan for next fall.

This league is for any high school age by who is not playing on a CIF high school team.  They can be home schooled or enrolled in a private, public, or charter school.  This is full contact, tackle football, so it will be taken with the utmost seriousness by the staff, and must be by the athletes and families.  There may be spring practice in June, 2009, and official practices will begin in late August or September of 2009.

Non game weeks will usually have 3-4 practices a week.  Practices will likely be 3:00-5:00 on weekdays between Monday and Thursday, with a possible Friday practice on non-game weeks.  Games will be on Friday afternoon or evening or on Saturday afternoon or evening.  Players need to keep their Friday and Saturdays open for games.   If you would like to help organize a team in your area, are available to coach or help with a team in any way, call Todd Nash to discuss it with him at 760-727-3604.   Teams will be formed in Escondido, South San Diego/La Mesa, the Point Loma area, Orange County, Torrance/South Bay, Riverside, Anaheim, and any other area where a school or group can field enough players.

The game schedule will start with the season opener on or around the third weekend of September, followed by a game each weekend for 6 regular season games.  With enough teams this game schedule could be expanded to 8 games.  There may be a league championship game the 1st or 2nd weekend of November if it is needed.  We will play 8 man tackle football under standard NFHS 8 man football rules.  Each team will play 3 home games and 3 away games.  A trophy will be awarded to the first place team in the league at the end of the season.  Away games will require some travel for each team.

Each team will have 6 games.  With an odd number of teams, each team will have a bye week.  The schedule of who is playing in the league and the game schedule will be published after teams and individuals are committed to the league.

 Costs:

bullet

The athletic fee will be determined by how a player is joining a team.  For players joining independently of any school or ISP team, expect around $400 for the team fee to include equipment and uniforms.

bulletFor those joining another already existing team or a school team, costs will be determined by that school or team.
bulletReferee fees for home games (currently none scheduled) and field rental costs (for home games and practices) are shared by the team.
bulletTravel costs to some away games.
bulletSpecial equipment for football practicing and games.
bulletExpect the total cost for the season to be around $500 per player, depending on previous participation (for the equipment cost).  This is a standard cost for football in almost any venue.  Pop Warner football charges $350-$500 in most areas of California.  Public high schools even charge from $300-$500 to play in addition to requiring players and parents to both work every week on fundraisers, ticket selling, and concessions stands at games.  This cost is not expensive - it is NORMAL for football.

Teams should be able to make money at home games charging admission at the gate.  This will offset many of the above listed costs.

This is not a recreational program.  This is a competitive and intense athletic program for ANY students not able to play in CIF who wish to play football at a high level.  It will require a dedication of your student's time and effort to practices daily in some cases, and weekly games.  These are required attendance events!  You must commit to the season fully to play!

If you are interested in playing football this fall you need to go to the REGISTRATION page and sign up immediately so we can begin to form teams in each geographic area.  Mail your deposit check for $200 per player when you are emailed to do so.  Email or call if you have any questions.  If you are a SCHOOL who is interested in fielding a team in the league, contact Todd Nash immediately and he will email you the full information and all forms for league entry.  If you have further questions, please call or email Todd Nash at (760) 727-3604 or CalAthletics@sbcglobal.net

Here is the key to having a team form in your area: SIGN UP!  Each year I get countless calls from people who say "We wanted to play, but we were waiting to see if a team was formed before we registered."  If you apply your logic to that idea, that means that no teams will ever form!  Registrations must come in on the website to get players and form teams!  So in order to see if a team forms in your area, register ASAP!  Your checks will not be deposited until a team actually forms and gets their season started.  If there is not team formed in your area, your check will be shredded.  Thanks!
