During August, 2010, Todd Nash will teach a Fencing Clinic in 12 sites in Southern California! This is a 1 week only clinic, offered only in these 12 sites, with 4 sites offered each week over a 3 week period. The clinic will cover the basic skills in foil fencing including footwork, right of way, attacks, parries (defenses), and some history of fencing. All students will be able to handle the foil and actually fence with another student starting early in the week. All students will wear the standard protective gear when fencing with the actual foil. This is a safe sport when done correctly with proper protective gear on, but students still could have small bruises occasionally from the foil. See the bottom if this page for directions to each site.
We will spend the first day covering footwork, body position, holding the foil, attacks, and defenses, all using a practice foil. We will talk about the different types of fencing. The second and third days will work on attacks and defenses, using practice foils and the actual foils. The fourth and fifth days will be actual bouts between students with the foil and all protective gear. This clinic will give you or your kids the chance to experience fencing without a major investment on your part! No equipment purchase is required - just come and enjoy! The will need to bring a handkerchief, scarf, or skull cap of some kind to wear under the helmet when they fence with the protective gear on. Helmets will be shared by students in the class so everyone must wear something on their head under the helmet. It may be helpful if your student wear something with some padding such as a jean jacket, sweatshirt, or something to provide some more padding on the torso. Fencing jackets are provided (along with fencing gloves and masks) which provide adequate protection, but some students may want extra padding. Students can wear jeans, sweatpants, or shorts. The sport is safe, and they will not get injured with the protective equipment on, but a scoring hit from the foil is still felt, and sometimes with younger kids it can sting. The class is open to boys and girls. Recommended youngest age is 5 years old through adults. Yes, mom and dad can take this clinic with their kids!
The Clinic will meet for 1 1/2 hours each day for 5 consecutive days, Monday - Friday. There will be 3 separate weeks of clinics, meeting in 4 different sites each week. Be sure to check the schedule for each week carefully. Clinics have been planned in such a way if you are unavailable for one week, there may be a clinic close by another week.
