Following is the homework for the fall, 2007 basketball class. Have your children practice the following drills for 15-30 minutes each day. You can alternate between drills is time is short, or go through all the drills. Remember, you need to get 20 minutes a day (average) for kids 8th grade and under, and 40 minutes a day (average) for kids in high school. For 8th grade & under PE is required each year. For high school, PE is required 2 out of 4 years. On all basketball drills keep the ball in the fingers, not using the palm of the hand for anything you do with the ball. Repeat the drills as needed to get enough time practicing the skills. Ball Handling Drills: 1. Move ball around waist either direction. Stop in the back, then move it to the front, 10 times each way. Then mov the ball around the waist in a full circle 20 times in each direction. 2. Place one leg in front, bend the knees, then move ball around that leg 20 times in each direction. 3. With the feet wide, knees bent, move the ball in a figure 8 around both legs, going through the legs from the front side first, then going from the back to the front, 10 cycles each way. Standing Dribbling Drills: 1. Dribble the ball with the right hand 20 times, then the left 20 times, focus on the ball touching only the fingers, and not the palm. Then dribble 20 times back & forth between the right and the left hand. 2. With one leg extended forward, dribble the ball 2 times on one side, then through the legs, then 2 times on the other side, and back through the legs. Repeat 20 times with each leg forward. 3. Dribble the ball around the body in a circle 10 times each way. 4. Low dribble: dribble the ball with the fingers 6 inches off the ground. 5. With the feet spread wide, dribble the ball in a figure 8 around the legs 10 times in each direction. Running Dribbling Drills: 1. Walk, jog, or run down the court/street/sidewalk dribbling the ball with the right hand, then do the same with the left hand, then alternating from the right to the left hand. If you have a court available, go down the court and back with one hand, then switch. Passing Drills:
